This is an original, fully signed military document dated April 2, 1863, signed by George Nelson Macy while serving as Lieutenant Colonel of the famed 20th Massachusetts Infantry (“The Harvard Regiment”).
At the time of this signature, Macy was already a combat veteran. Just three months later, on July 3, 1863, he was severely wounded at the Battle of Gettysburg when a bullet shattered his left forearm, resulting in amputation. He would go on to be wounded twice more (Wilderness and Deep Bottom Run) and rose through the ranks to Brevet Major General by the end of the war.
