Uncased, Trimmed 1/4-Plate Tintype: Full-Standing Armed Union Infantryman with Patriotic Studio Backdrop – Sharp Clarity, Circa 1861–1865

This outstanding quarter-plate ferrotype (tintype) presents a crisp, full-length portrait of an unidentified Union soldier standing in regulation attire. The subject is posed confidently in a photographer's studio, armed with a rifled musket (bayonet affixed) and in standard Federal issue: four-button sack coat, kepi with a buckle.

The composition is enhanced by a classic patriotic backdrop, a painted canvas scene evoking a military encampment with elements such as tents, a prominent  American flag. A popular motif among itinerant photographers during the Civil War to convey loyalty and resolve.

The image exhibits excellent sharpness and detail throughout, capturing fine facial features, uniform textures, and equipment with remarkable clarity for the format. As is common with many surviving uncased tintypes, the plate shows light bends and minor surface imperfections (typical age-related wear and handling), yet the overall presentation remains strong.
