Signed carte de visite (CDV) of William H. Valentine (born ca. 1838, Worcester, MA; died May 18, 1901), a Union veteran who served in two Massachusetts regiments during the Civil War.

Valentine, aged 23 and listed as a musician (likely drummer or fifer in early service), enlisted as a Private on April 16, 1861, and mustered into Company G, 6th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry ("The Fighting Sixth," famous for the Baltimore riot on April 19, 1861) on April 22, 1861. He mustered out August 2, 1861, at Boston after the regiment's initial three-month term.

He reenlisted/recommissioned August 23, 1861, as Sergeant Major in the Field & Staff of the 21st Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry (a three-year regiment in the IX Corps, Army of the Potomac/Army of the James). Promotions followed rapidly:

  • Sergeant Major (as of August 23, 1861)
  • 2nd Lieutenant (January 1, 1862)
  • 1st Lieutenant (June 19, 1862)
  • Captain (March 6, 1863, Company F)

He resigned August 17, 1864 (likely due to health, family, or other reasons; the 21st saw heavy action at Antietam, Fredericksburg, Burnside's Mud March, and later campaigns).

Post-war, Valentine was a member of GAR Post #185 (Ladd & Whitney Post) in Lowell, MA—named for two 6th Massachusetts soldiers killed in the 1861 Baltimore riot—indicating his continued ties to veterans' organizations and his early regiment.
