Signed CDV of Wound Amputee George Basley from the 1st Massachusetts Heavy Artillery. Basley was wounded at the battle of Petersburg leading to the amputation of his right arm.  This photo was likely taken in July or August of 1864 as George was on the road to recovery infection like took effect after this photo was taken and took his life. He died August 5, 1864.

 

Residence Quincy, MA; a 35-year-old Farmer.Enlisted on 3/6/1862 at Quincy, MA as a Priv. On 3/6/1862, he mustered into "L" Co. Massachusetts 1st Heavy Artillery. He re-enlisted on 3/10/1864.He died of wounds on 8/5/1864 at Portsmouth Grove, RI He was listed as:Wounded 6/22/1864 Petersburg, VA (Severe wound in right arm, amputated)
