Signed CDV of Union Soldier Edward B. Powers, 4th Illinois Cavalry – Tift, Memphis, Tennessee Backmark
This is a clear carte de visite of Edward B. Powers of Company I, 4th Illinois Cavalry. The image shows him in uniform, and it is signed on the reverse in period ink. The back also features a desirable Tift, Memphis, Tennessee photographer’s backmark.
Service Summary:
- Residence: Earlville, Illinois
- Enlisted August 13, 1862, as a Private
- Mustered into Company I, 4th Illinois Cavalry on August 13, 1862
- Promoted to Corporal
- Intra-regimental transfer: Company I to Company B (June 14, 1865)

This CDV was very likely taken in Memphis near the end of his service, as the regiment was operating in the Western Theater. The Memphis backmark, combined with the signature on the back and the corporal stripes visible in the image, makes this a solid identified example of a 4th Illinois Cavalry veteran.
