Signed CDV of Roderick Justin of the 4th Illinois Cavalry
Original Civil War carte de visite (CDV) photograph of Union cavalryman Roderick Justin of the 4th Illinois Cavalry, signed on the verso and bearing a period three-cent tax stamp, adding to its authenticity and collector appeal. Justin was a resident of Port Byron, Illinois, and enlisted at age 20 on September 5, 1861, as a Private. He mustered into Company M of the 4th Illinois Cavalry on September 26, 1861, and re-enlisted on February 17, 1864. During his service, he was promoted to Sergeant and also made an intra-regimental transfer on June 14, 1865, from Company M to Company B. He transferred out on June 23, 1865, at New Orleans, Louisiana, and on that same date transferred into Company I of the 12th Illinois Cavalry. He continued in service until he was mustered out on May 29, 1866, at Houston, Texas. A well-identified and desirable Civil War CDV with signature and tax stamp, representing a veteran cavalryman who served through multiple enlistments and commands.
