Signed CDV of Henry Marshall of the 4th Illinois Cavalry with Tax Stamp
Original Civil War carte de visite (CDV) photograph of Union cavalryman Henry S. Marshall of the 4th Illinois Cavalry, signed on the verso and bearing a period tax stamp, adding to its authenticity and collector appeal. Marshall was a resident of Fulton, Illinois, a 23-year-old farmer at the time of his enlistment. He enlisted on September 5, 1861, at Port Byron, Illinois, as a Private and mustered into Company M of the 4th Illinois Cavalry on September 26, 1861. He re-enlisted on February 17, 1864, and was later promoted to Sergeant. On June 14, 1865, he made an intra-regimental transfer from Company M to Company B. He transferred out on June 23, 1865, at New Orleans, Louisiana, and on that same date transferred into Company I of the 12th Illinois Cavalry. He served until he was mustered out on February 26, 1866, at New Orleans. At enlistment, he was described as 5 feet 9 inches tall with a florid complexion, hazel eyes, and auburn hair. A well-identified Civil War CDV with signature and tax stamp, representing a veteran Illinois cavalryman with extended service through multiple enlistments.
