Sharp 1/6th Plate Ambrotype of a Young Confederate Soldier – Possible Louisiana Connection, Shell Jacket

This is a crisp and attractive 1/6th plate ambrotype of a sharp-looking young Confederate soldier wearing a well-tailored shell jacket. The soldier has a confident, direct gaze and youthful appearance, typical of many early-war Southern volunteers. The image is clear with strong contrast and excellent detail in the uniform and facial features.

The shell jacket shown is particularly noteworthy. It is nearly identical in cut, style, and trim to the jacket worn by Albert Martin of the famed Louisiana Washington Artillery, whose photograph is held in the Library of Congress collection. This style of jacket is strongly associated with Louisiana Confederate units, especially early-war artillery and infantry from the Gulf South.
The ambrotype is housed in a complete original leatherette case, providing excellent period presentation and protection.

This is a very nice, bright example of a young Confederate in a distinctive shell jacket with strong visual appeal and a possible Louisiana attribution. Images this clear with such a direct comparison to a well-known LOC photograph are increasingly difficult to find in today’s market.
