Rare Civil War Tintype - George Armstrong Custer: Tintype Version of the Iconic Brady Photograph - Grand Review of the Armies, May 23, 1865

A highly desirable and rare tintype of George Armstrong Custer (1839–1876), reproducing the famous Mathew Brady photograph taken on May 23, 1865, in Washington, D.C., during the Grand Review of the Armies.

This popular image captures the flamboyant 25-year-old brevet Major General in full uniform, fresh from the final campaigns of the Civil War. While most commonly encountered as a Brady CDV (with auction records reaching $9,200), tintype versions are exceptionally scarce.

Reference: Listed in D. Mark Katz’s definitive reference Custer in Photographs as Item K-78V (page 62). Auction records for this exact tintype format are virtually nonexistent, making this a standout opportunity for advanced Custer or Civil War photography collectors.

This tintype represents one of the most iconic images of Custer from the height of his fame at the close of the Civil War. A true centerpiece for any collection focused on Custer, the Army of the Potomac, the Grand Review, or 19th-century military photography.

Condition: Strong image with good tones and clarity. Minor crazing and scraping on the lower portion of the tintype. A museum-quality rarity — the sought-after Brady Custer portrait in the much scarcer tintype format.
