Rare Signed CDV of Atticus Greene Haygood Confederate African American Advocate
Rare Signed CDV of Bishop Atticus Greene Haygood – Confederate Chaplain & Progressive Advocate for African Americans
This scarce signed carte de visite features Atticus Greene Haygood (1839–1899), a prominent Southern educator, author, bishop, and one of the most forward-thinking voices of the post-Civil War “New South.” The image shows Haygood in a suit jacket, and it is boldly signed by him, adding significant value to this already uncommon portrait. The image has a unique Atlanta, Georgia backmark.
A Methodist minister and Confederate chaplain during the Civil War serving in the 15th Georgia Infantry, Haygood rose to national prominence as president of Emory College (1875–1884), where he modernized the curriculum and expanded access to education. As editor of the *Wesleyan Christian Advocate* and later as a Bishop of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, he fearlessly advocated for reconciliation between North and South, federal aid to education, and expanded opportunities for African Americans. His groundbreaking 1881 book Our Brother in Black: His Freedom and His Future was a courageous call for justice and educational advancement for Black Southerners at a time when such views were rare in the white South.
A well-preserved and personally signed photograph of this influential progressive Southern leader, this CDV is a highly desirable piece for collectors of Methodist history, Southern educators, New South advocates, or those interested in post-Civil War racial reconciliation efforts. An important and uncommon signed image of a complex and forward-thinking 19th-century figure.
