Exceptionally Rare Hunting Half-Plate Ambrotype of Chaplin Joseph Ford Sutton
Exceptionally Rare Half-Plate Ambrotype of Joseph Ford Sutton (1827-1912)
Chaplain, 102nd New York Infantry; General Agent, U.S. Christian Commission (Department of the Gulf), 1863.
Striking full-length half-plate ambrotype depicting Joseph Ford Sutton posed in a frontier hunting tableau. Sutton stands with one foot resting upon a recently killed White Tail Deer. He wears civilian field attire with a wide-brim felt hat, conveying the rugged outdoor character typical of mid-19th-century frontier imagery.
In his right hand, Sutton holds a half-stock rifle oriented downward in a relaxed but controlled manner; in his left, a large hunting knife reinforcing the immediacy of the kill and the authenticity of the scene. A large revolver is tucked into his belt, presenting a rare and powerful visual combination of period arms. The deliberate pose emphasizes self-reliance, frontier competence, and physical authority-qualities seldom depicted so explicitly in identified ambrotypes of this size.
Housed in an ornate original half-plate case with gilt brass mat and preserver. The image retains strong clarity with expected age oxidation.
Tucked behind the image is an original manuscript paper label, handwritten in period pencil, identifying the sitter as "Joseph F. Sutton." The label is original to the case and provides firm contemporary identification. Residence was not listed; 34 years old. Enlisted on 3/6/1862 at New York City, NY as a Chaplain. On 3/8/1862, he was commissioned into Field & Staff New York 102nd Infantry. He was discharged on 11/22/1862
A museum-quality, identified half-plate ambrotype of a Civil War chaplain and senior Christian Commission agent-an extraordinarily rare survival combining frontier imagery, religious leadership, and humanitarian service.
Professionally sealed by Casey Waters and archival Mylar inserted to protect the original pencil inscription. Ex: Bill Turner Collection.
