This is an original carte de visite (CDV) photograph of Brigadier General Richard Brooke Garnett, a Confederate commander killed in action during Pickett’s Charge at the Battle of Gettysburg on July 3, 1863. The image is a classic wartime head vignette style, focusing tightly on the general’s face.
