Rare 1864 Trans-Mississippi Confederate Officer Receipts – Signed
Rare 1864 Trans-Mississippi Confederate Officer Receipts – Signed by Maj. W.H. Haynes (Fort Donelson & Commissary-General) & Capt. J.K.P. Pritchard
This is an exceptionally rare and historically significant original Confederate financial document from the Trans-Mississippi Department, consisting of official receipts issued to officers during the first quarter of 1864—a critical time when the region operated in near isolation following the fall of Vicksburg. Prominently signed by Maj. William H. Haynes, who served as brigade commissary to Brig. Gen. Gideon J. Pillow at the surrender of Fort Donelson in February 1862, was appointed Commissary-General of the Trans-Mississippi Department in October 1863, and by October 1864 had risen to Major and Chief of the Clothing Bureau while stationed at Shreveport, Louisiana, the department’s wartime headquarters. Also featured is Capt. J.K.P. Pritchard, a Captain and Assistant Quartermaster under Maj. Gen. Sterling Price, stationed at Jacksonport, Arkansas in 1863 during Price’s operations leading into the Camden Expedition. Written in bold period ink on original paper, the document shows light toning and minor edge wear consistent with field use but remains fully legible and archivally stable. Trans-Mississippi records are among the rarest of all Confederate paper, with fewer than a dozen comparable Haynes-signed examples known in private hands. Linking a Fort Donelson veteran to high-level Trans-Mississippi logistics, this is a cornerstone piece for advanced collections
