Rare 1862 Civil War Soldier’s Letter from Richmond, VA – South Carolina Regiment – Battle of Harpers Ferry Mentioned
 
Authentic handwritten letter dated September 23, 1862, penned by Confederate soldier J.B.O. Barkley while recovering in a Richmond hospital. Written to his parents in South Carolina, he describes his improving health, eagerness to rejoin his regiment, the recent heavy fighting near Harpers Ferry (Antietam Campaign), and plans to send a newspaper listing the killed and wounded. He mentions fellow soldiers, including William and David Gambrell, and sends regards to family and neighbors.

Richmond Va Sept 23rd 1862
Dear Father & Mother
I take my pen in hand to write you a few lines to let you know that I am in some better health than I was when I wrote to you before. I hope that these lines may find you all well when they come to hand. I hant heard nothing from you since the letter that you sent me by W. K. Watson and I am anxious to hear from you all. I am still in the Hospittle but am monsters tired of it for my fair is Ruff and not a nuff at that. I think I will start to the Regt in a few days if I get no back set for I had rather be at the Regt than to be at any sick a place as I am. Our Regt has bin in a heavy fight near Harpers Ferry on last saturday but I dont know what our loss was but it is reported to be severe. I will send mother a news paper so she can see who is killed and wounded that went from South Carolina.

I am in hopes that you will send me a letter so I can get it by the last of this week if you dont do as I can get it by next monday you needent to direct it to the Hospittle but send it to the Regt as usual and I will be apt to get it for I think there will be a mail rout to the Regt. I cant write nothing about them boys for I hant seen none of them that belongs to my Regt as of till Mr. Lawes that William is here and is about well and I expect that him & me will start to our Regt together. Tell Mrs. Gambrell that I heard from David Gambrell when he was at Leesburg and he was well. I will make my letter short this time on the account of sending mother her paper. She will see in it that Georg has went through the fight unhurt. Give my best Respect to Elizabeth Landindey & aunt Sally & to all the neighbours & friends. I still remain your son till Death.
