Patriotic Tintype of Union Soldier with American Flag and Tax Stamps
CDV sized Patriotic Tintype of Union Soldier with American Flag and Tax Stamps
The Soldier stands full-length in full uniform: a dark wool frock coat (single-breasted with a standing collar and brass buttons in two rows), light-colored trousers tucked into sturdy brogans (boots), and a forage cap (kepi) perched on his head. A large circular medallion or identification disc hangs from a chain around his neck—common among soldiers for personal identification or as a sentimental keepsake.
He stands with one hand resting casually on the back of a turned wooden chair (cane seat), positioned slightly in front of him. The chair, along with a faux classical pedestal or balustrade to his left, serves as typical studio props to lend a sense of formality and stability to the pose.
The backdrop is a hand-painted theatrical scene, highly characteristic of Civil War studio photography: a romanticized military encampment with white canvas tents pitched across a rugged landscape of hills with cannons and American flags. This image has a three and two cent George Washington tax stamp on the back. There are some light bends in the image but overall it will display great in any collection
