On August 29, 1968, an A-6B Intruder (bureau number 151561, call sign Buckeye 521) launched from the aircraft carrier USS America (CVA-66) carrying two crew members on a nighttime armed reconnaissance mission to targets in the vicinity of Vinh Son, North Vietnam. Radio contact with the Intruder was lost after a final transmission during its approach to the target area. Search and rescue efforts were initiated immediately but were unsuccessful. Other aircraft flying the same mission reported seeing a large fireball on the ground in the area where the aircraft disappeared. It was suspected that the aircraft was either struck by an enemy missile or crashed while attempting to avoid enemy fire. The Intruder and its two crew members remain unaccounted for.
Lieutenant (Junior Grade) Robert Ray Duncan entered the U.S. Navy from Florida and was a member of Attack Squadron 85, Carrier Air Wing 6. He was the pilot of this Intruder at the time of its loss and he went missing with the aircraft. His remains were not recovered. He was promoted to Lieutenant Commander after his disappearance. Today, Lieutenant Commander Duncan is memorialized on the Courts of the Missing at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific. His name is also inscribed along with all his fallen comrades on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall in Washington, DC.
