KIA Lt. Col. William Curry, 106th Pennsylvania Infantry – Pay Voucher for Black Servants

A Civil War pay voucher associated with Lt. Col. William Curry of the 106th Pennsylvania Infantry, documenting payment for the services of two Black servants, Myer Smith and Warner Washington. The voucher is dated August 31, 1862.

Lt. Col. Curry, who was captured and exchanged as a prisoner at Aiken’s Landing, Virginia, was later wounded at the Battle of Spotsylvania Court House, ultimately succumbing to his injuries. His tragic death adds poignant significance to this document.

The voucher is notable not only for its historical content but also for the presence of multiple signatures of Lt. Col. William Curry, each adding a layer of authenticity and personal connection to the document.

A rare and significant piece of Civil War history, reflecting both the role of Black servants in the Union Army and the personal sacrifice of an officer who gave his life in defense of the Union cause. The document is in good overall condition with some folding lines and normal ware for a document of this age.
