KIA at Chickamauga, GA CDV of Thomas Whiting 89th Illinois Infantry
This is carte de visite (CDV) is of Captain Thomas Whiting Company G, 89th Illinois Volunteer Infantry, who was killed in action (KIA) at the Battle of Chickamauga, Georgia, on September 19, 1863.
Whiting, from Walnut Grove, Illinois, mustered in as Captain on August 25, 1862. The 89th Illinois (part of the Army of the Cumberland) fought heavily at Chickamauga, suffering severe losses—including Lieutenant Colonel Duncan J. Hall, Captains Rice, Spink, and Whiting, plus Lieutenant Ellis, among many others. Whiting was reported killed during the intense fighting on Day 1, where the regiment helped stem Confederate advances in the bloody chaos of the woods and fields.
The CDV shows Whiting in officer's uniform—dark frock coat with captain's shoulder straps/insignia and his sword.
Condition issues include corner clipping trimmed and a bend in the lower legs.
A poignant, identified relic of an Illinois regiment's sacrifice at one of the war's bloodiest battles—scarce for this officer, with strong appeal to collectors of Western Theater, Chickamauga, or Illinois Civil War material.
