The shield, with part of the stars obscurad sup- ports the American Eagle, The thought intended to be conveyed by it is that the olive branch was tendered by the government, and spurned by the rebels, when it was cast under foot and the conflict raged until the chain of slavery was torn asunder; one portion remaining grasped in the talons of the Eagle, and the other held aloft in his beak.
