Incredible 4th Ohio Volunteers Badge with Eagle
This 4th Ohio Volunteers Badge with Eagle is a remarkable Civil War artifact from one of the most battle-hardened regiments in the Union Army. This impressive badge features a prominent eagle and very nice 5th Corp Badge with 4th OVI stamped into it.
The 4th Ohio Volunteer Infantry began its campaign in western Virginia, capturing Beverly on July 12, 1861, and engaging in actions at Huttonsville, Pendleton, Petersburg, Romney, and Blue's Gap. In 1862 they fought at Winchester, Port Republic, Antietam, and Fredericksburg. The regiment continued through the Chancellorsville Campaign in 1863 and the grueling Overland Campaign of 1864, including the Wilderness, Spotsylvania (with the Bloody Angle), Cold Harbor, and the long Siege of Petersburg. They participated in the final Appomattox Campaign, witnessing Lee's surrender on April 9, 1865, before marching in the Grand Review in Washington and mustering out on July 12, 1865.
During their service, the 4th Ohio lost 8 officers and 95 enlisted men killed or mortally wounded, plus 3 officers and 155 enlisted men to disease, for a total of 261 casualties. The eagle-topped badge serves as a powerful and rare tribute to their endurance, bravery, and sacrifice across dozens of major engagements in the Eastern Theater. Such pieces are highly prized by collectors of Ohio Civil War militaria for encapsulating the regiment's full story in one striking artifact.
