Identified 1/9 Plate Tintype of Double-Armed Union Soldier in Thermoplastic Case

A striking 1/9 plate tintype depicting a double-armed Union soldier, housed in a beautiful period thermoplastic oval case featuring crossed weapons. The image displays excellent clarity and strong visual content, showing a bust view of a Federal soldier wearing a kepi adorned with gilded initials “JS.”

The reverse of the case bears a period pencil inscription reading “William Padgett,” with the date “1861” written beneath the name; the date appears to have been added at a later time. While the identification is compelling, the prevalence of men named William Padgett during the Civil War era makes it difficult to definitively attribute this image to a specific individual without additional documentation.

An attractive and evocative Civil War tintype with notable patriotic symbolism, clear imagery, and an early war association.
