Specialist 4 Ray Etherton won the Silver Star for gallantry in action at the Battle of Loch Ninh on October 29th, 1967, while serving in Lima Platoon, Charlie Company, 1st Battalion 18th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division “The Big Red One”. Etherton had been in Vietnam since January of 1967, and was wounded during Operation Billings in late June of ‘67. He returned to the 18th Infantry just in time for Operation Shenendoah II, where the goal was to secure Highway 13 which linked Saigon to Cambodia, and was being used heavily by the Vietcong. On the early moring of October 29th, ARVN forces successfully defended the village of Loch Nihn against an overwhelming VC attack, and the 18th Infantry was deployed on a search and destroy mission to locate the rest of the VC in the area and eliminate them. Shortly after Charlie company landed, a unit of local CDIG militia radioed that they were pinned down under VC fire. Specialist Etherton immediatly volunteered with the rest of his squadmates to help the trapped militiamen. They flanked the VC position from behind, and after a fierce firefight, Lima platoon decisively defeated the Vietcong and rescued the trapped group of friendlies. All four men from Lima platoon received the Silver Star for gallantry in action, including Spec Etherton, and SSgt John May, who was mortally wounded in the fight. Spec Etherton returned to the states in December of 67, and was promoted to Sergeant and assigned to the 2nd Armored Division, which would remain stateside the entire war.
