Exceptional 1/6 Plate Daguerreotype – Cherished Sibling Portrait c. 1850s
This exquisite and deeply touching daguerreotype captures a moment of pure innocence and tender sibling affection from the mid-19th century.
A sweet little girl (approximately 4–6 years old) stands hand-in-hand with her slightly older brother (perhaps 6–9 years old). The young girl wears a delicate light dress with dainty puffed sleeves, lace trim, and a beautiful, rich-colored neck ribbon — the very picture of Victorian childhood femininity. Her brother stands proudly beside her in a dark, finely detailed jacket with bright buttons, white collar, and neatly combed hair — every inch the proper young gentleman of the era.
Their tiny hands are clasped together in that instinctive, protective way only siblings can manage — a gesture that melts the heart even after more than 170 years.
The image is housed in its original, beautifully preserved full leather case featuring a brass mat & preserver combination.
Despite some typical age-appropriate dark spotting and patina around the edges (all completely outside the portrait area), the central image remains remarkably clear, sharp, and emotionally powerful — with wonderful contrast and lifelike presence. There is mat rubs along the image edges but it does not affect the focal point of the image.
