Clipped Cornered Confederate Militia Belt Buckle Early War Issue
Confederate Militia Belt Buckle Early War Issue
Attractive and still affordable Southern-used belt buckle of the pattern illustrated as Plate 453, page 245, in the expanded edition of Confederate Belt Buckles and Plates by Steve Mullinax.
Mullinax notes that this simple and inexpensive style buckle was issued to many Virginia militia units at the beginning of the war. These early-war buckles were produced quickly to meet immediate demand but proved unable to withstand the rigors of field service when worn on leather belts. Numerous examples have reportedly been recovered from 1861–1862 Confederate camp and battlefield sites.
Condition:
Excavated condition with honest field wear and period breakage to the attachment hardware. Strong character and unmistakable early-war Confederate militia construction.
