Civil War Letter from Davis County Iowa

Chico (?) July 29th 1862

Dear Father & Mother,

It has been near two months scince I wrote to you so I will send you a few lines to let you know how l am getting along. I have been down from where I last wrote you for some time working in harvest they have long and tedious time harvesting in this country it last two months and sometimes longer the grain is about all cut now my health this summer has been very good until within the last week I have been trying to have the Ague and I believe I made it out past of the time but there is plenty of qumne in this country and I can break it up I think James has had good health all summer I received a letter upon long ago from James Gore and I was sorry to hear that Uncle John's severe illness but I hope he is well by this time as I always makes me feel sad to hear of many one being sick at home but we are hable to be sick in almost any place or country we have had no war news of importance scince the fighting before Richmond but I hope they have not been idle all the time scince then. I would like to see that whole secession race at a single stroke if it were possible.

have not saw any of the old neighbors you said was coming acrofs this season but there has not many Emigrants got in yet or perhaps the most of them was going to Oregon at any rate I think they have brought their pigs to a poor misket but I reckon they will find that out whin they go to sell them tell mis Gink that I have made every enquiry possible to find her Brother but have heard nothing from him yet But I must bring y letter to a close for this time Sam & Ben I want you to write and tell me where Tim Harris is for want to see Lisz you know and Father I want you to write as often as you can and let us know how you are getting along so I will close by sending my love to you all this from your son.
