Civil War Documents from Berdan’s Sharpshooter Jeremiah Clough
These documents pertain to the Civil War service of Jeremiah Clough, a member of the 2nd United States Sharpshooters, Company F. Clough was born in Weare, New Hampshire, and was 32 years old and living in Dunbarton, N.H., at the time of his enlistment on September 28, 1861. He was mustered in as a Private on November 26, 1861.
Clough was wounded in battle and subsequently discharged due to disability on April 15, 1862, in Washington, D.C. Following his discharge, he served for an unknown period in a military hospital. The documents cover the length and nature of his service, as well as his post-injury hospital duties. They are signed by Clough with an “X,” indicating his inability to write.
After the war, Clough returned to his hometown of Weare in Hillsborough County, New Hampshire, where he lived until his death in 1892.
