Civil War CDV - Brevet Brigadier General George W. Zinn Pennsylvania
Civil War CDV - Brevet Brigadier General George W. Zinn, 84th & 57th Pennsylvania Infantry - Stoic Pose with Hat in hand
A strong, original carte de visite of George W. Zinn (1842–1899) of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, shown in a stoic military pose wearing his hat.
Backmark: F. Gutekunst, Philadelphia — one of the premier photographers of the Civil War era, renowned for high-quality portraits of Union officers.
Zinn enlisted on October 1, 1861, at Harrisburg as 2nd Lieutenant in Company B, 84th Pennsylvania Infantry. He rose rapidly through the ranks:
- Captain (October 2, 1862)
- Major (December 23, 1862)
- Lt. Colonel (August 1, 1864)
- Colonel (March 19, 1865)
- Brevet Brigadier General (April 6, 1865, for gallant and meritorious services)
He was wounded twice: at Cold Harbor (June 1, 1864) and Petersburg (October 1/2, 1864). On January 13, 1865, he transferred to Field & Staff of the 57th Pennsylvania Infantry (upon consolidation of the 84th) and was mustered out on June 29, 1865, at Alexandria, Virginia.
A hardware merchant before the war, Zinn served with distinction through the Army of the Potomac’s major campaigns. After the war he lived in Harrisburg (and briefly elsewhere), remaining active in veteran affairs. He is buried in Harrisburg Cemetery, Section B, Lot 88. This CDV captures Zinn in a classic wartime — serious expression, wearing his hat, excellent uniform details. Gutekunst portraits of field-grade officers and brevet generals are highly sought after by collectors.
Ideal for: Pennsylvania regimental collections, Gettysburg / Petersburg / Army of the Potomac displays, brevet general collections, or any serious Civil War image collection.
