CDV of Wounded in Action Soldier August Schmuck 155th Pennsylvania Infantry
Carte de Visite (CDV) of Twice-Wounded Union Officer August Schmuck – 155th Pennsylvania Infantry / 41st U.S. Colored Troops
Original Civil War Carte de Visite (CDV) of August Schmuck, a Union soldier who served with the 155th Pennsylvania Infantry and later as an officer in the 41st U.S. Colored Troops. The photograph bears the backmark of noted Philadelphia photographer Wm. M. Fly, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
August Schmuck was a resident of Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, and enlisted on September 11, 1862, as a Corporal in Company K, 155th Pennsylvania Infantry. During his service with the regiment he was twice wounded in action—first at the Battle of Chancellorsville, Virginia (May 3, 1863) and again at the Battle of the Wilderness, Virginia (May 5, 1864).
On September 29, 1864, Schmuck was discharged from the 155th Pennsylvania for promotion. Shortly thereafter, on September 26, 1864, he was commissioned as a Captain in Company C, 41st U.S. Colored Troops Infantry. He served in that capacity until his discharge on September 30, 1865, near the close of the war.
