CDV of Full Standing Union Soldier James Scott, 4th Illinois Cavalry – Period Inscription
This is a rare and desirable full standing carte de visite of James Scott of Company L, 4th Illinois Cavalry. The image shows the soldier in a clear, full-length pose wearing his Union uniform, offering an excellent view of his complete outfit and stature. A period ink inscription on the front identifies the subject.
Service Summary:
- Residence: McLean County, Illinois
- Occupation: Farmer
- Enlisted September 2, 1861, at LeRoy, Illinois, at age 27 as a Private
- Mustered into Company L, 4th Illinois Cavalry on October 15, 1861
- Re-enlisted February 17, 1864
- Died of disease on October 5, 1864, at Natchez, Mississippi
This CDV was very likely taken in Natchez while Scott was serving in the Western Theater. Tragically, he died there just a few weeks after his re-enlistment. Full standing views of identified Union cavalrymen are particularly sought after, making this an especially strong example with solid historical significance.
