This is a very clear and striking waist-up CDV of Private Michael Wilson of Company L, 4th Illinois Cavalry. The image shows the young soldier in his Union uniform with excellent clarity and strong presence. A period ink inscription on the front identifies the subject.

At the time of enlistment, Wilson stood an impressive 6'2" tall with a light complexion, blue eyes, and light hair. He was unmarried.
The CDV was very likely taken in Natchez while Wilson was serving in the Western Theater. Tragically, he died there just weeks before his regiment mustered out. This identified image of a soldier who died in service carries strong historical interest, especially with the direct connection to Natchez, Mississippi.
