It depicts two young women in an affectionate studio pose—one kneeling on a patterned rug, wrapped in a heavy knitted wool shawl/cape Notably, the kneeling woman has a prominent mustache, an unusual but documented detail in some Victorian portraits (possibly natural, theatrical, or enhanced for effect).
 
Her companion stands in profile, smiling and clasping her hand, dressed in a long wool coat/cape with striped scarf and muff—classic Civil War-era winter fashion (circa 1862–1866), when shawls, capes, fur accents, and muffs were common over wide hoop skirts.
