CDV of the White House by Bell & Bro, Washington, D.C.

The White House, located at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington, D.C., serves as both the official residence and workplace of the President of the United States. Construction began in 1792, and the building was completed in 1800, with President John Adams becoming its first occupant. Designed by James Hoban in the Neoclassical style, the White House has undergone numerous changes over the years, including expansions and restorations following significant events such as the British burning of Washington in 1814 during the War of 1812. Rebuilt and restored under Hoban’s direction, the structure soon became a lasting symbol of the American presidency and a central feature of the nation’s capital.

Throughout its history, the White House has evolved alongside the country it represents. Presidents and First Families have left their mark on its architecture and interiors—most notably Thomas Jefferson, who added terraces and stables.
