Original Civil War carte de visite (CDV) photograph of Union soldier Robert Ramsey of the 4th Illinois Cavalry, depicted in civilian clothing and featuring a period inscription, adding both character and authenticity to the piece. Ramsey was a resident of Hudson, Illinois, a 20-year-old farmer at the time of his enlistment. He enlisted on September 23, 1861, at Bloomington, Illinois, as a Private and mustered into Company L of the 4th Illinois Cavalry on October 15, 1861. During his service, he was promoted to Corporal and served until he was mustered out on November 3, 1864, at Springfield, Illinois. At enlistment, he was described as 5 feet 9 inches tall with a light complexion, blue eyes, and brown hair. A nicely identified Civil War CDV with period inscription, offering a more personal glimpse of a Union cavalryman, shown in civilian attire rather than uniform, making it a distinctive addition to any collection.
