Civil War–era CDV photograph of Private Henry Ruoff, who served in Company B, 23rd Pennsylvania Infantry. The image shows Ruoff in civilian clothing and bears the photographer’s backmark of B. F. Reimer of Philadelphia.
 
Henry Ruoff enlisted as a Private on September 3, 1862, and mustered into Company B of the 23rd Pennsylvania Infantry the same day. His residence was not recorded at the time of enlistment. Ruoff’s service was brief; he died on February 15, 1863, at Falmouth, Virginia, during the regiment’s period of service in the Army of the Potomac.
