CDV of One of Mosby's Men taken in Alexandria, Virginia. This CDV capture the true essense of a Southern Soldier, ragged and tough! This soldiers pants are tattered and his great coat is dusty and his boots are wrinkled and worn. But his hat impecable. This photo was taken at 204 King, Cor. Columbus Street Alexandria, Virginia by Bowdoin, Taylor & CO. Other Mosby Soldier images were taken on other studios on the same street!
After many discussions with other Mosby collectors we feel there is a chance this is Pvt. Andrew Reinhardt Bartenstein of the 43rd Virginia Cavalry that served as apart of Mosby's men based off a 1870s tintype of Bartenstein with curly hair, a sharp downward pointed nose and similar facial features. In August of 1864, at the age of sixteen, Andrew (Reinhardt) joined Company C, 43rd Battalion, Virginia Cavalry known as Mosby's Rangers under Capt. W. H Chapman. After Lee surrendered, young Pvt. Reinhardt was paroled at Winchester, Virginia, having been captured by the Union Army. Bartenstein would live until 1916 in Fauquier County, Virginia.
