Original Civil War Carte de Visite (CDV) of John A. Morris, an officer of the 7th New York Heavy Artillery Regiment who was killed in action during the Battle of Spotsylvania Court House.
Morris enlisted on August 9, 1862, at Albany, at the age of 26, entering service as a 1st Lieutenant. On the same date he was commissioned into Company C, 7th New York Heavy Artillery.
Shortly after entering service, Morris received a promotion to Captain on August 19, 1862.
Originally organized as heavy artillery assigned to the defenses of Washington, D.C., the 7th New York Heavy Artillerywas later ordered to the front in 1864 during Ulysses S. Grant’s Overland Campaign. Like several other heavy artillery regiments, it fought as infantry and suffered extremely heavy casualties.
Captain Morris was killed in action on May 19, 1864, during the fighting around Spotsylvania, part of the brutal and prolonged struggle between Union and Confederate forces in Virginia.
He was later buried at Albany Rural Cemetery in Albany, New York.
