CDV of Confederate General Robert Rhodes with Tanner & Vanness Backmark Lynchburg, Virginia.

Robert Emmet Rodes (born Lynchburg, VA, March 29, 1829) was a Virginia-born engineer who became a Confederate general. A VMI graduate (1848) and railroad engineer, he rose from leading a company at Fort Morgan to become colonel of the Fifth Alabama in 1861, then brigadier general and commander of the First Alabama Brigade. He fought in key battles from Williamsburg and Seven Pines to Chancellorsville, where his division conduct earned him a promotion to major general. He led divisions under D. H. Hill, distinguished himself at Gettysburg, and continued at the Wilderness, Spotsylvania, and Cold Harbor. Killed near Winchester on September 19, 1864, by a shell fragment, he died amid a moment of tactical triumph.
