James B. Gordon (1822–1864) was a distinguished Confederate cavalry commander whose audacity and leadership earned him rapid promotion from captain to brigadier general during the American Civil War. A native of Wilkes County, North Carolina, Gordon graduated from Emory and Henry College before establishing himself as a planter and merchant. Enlisting in 1861, he raised Company D of the 1st North Carolina Cavalry and rose through the ranks under J.E.B. Stuart, distinguishing himself at the Seven Days Battles, Second Bull Run, and Brandy Station. Appointed brigadier general in September 1863, he led a brigade in W.H.F. Lee’s division with characteristic dash, most notably during the 1864 Overland Campaign. Mortally wounded on May 11, 1864, while covering Lee’s retreat at Meadow Bridge near Richmond, Gordon died the following day at the age of 41, mourned by Robert E. Lee as “one of the most promising officers in the army.”
