This is a carte de visite (CDV) portrait of Captain (later Major) Charles Jarvis (1821–1863), a Union officer from Weathersfield, Vermont, who served in Company D, 9th Vermont Infantry Regiment.

 

Enlisted May 24, 1863, as Captain; commissioned June 19, 1863. Mortally wounded December 1, 1863, while on a scout/expedition near (New Berne), North Carolina—likely during or related to skirmishes around Newport Barracks or the Atlantic & North Carolina Railroad area. He died of those wounds the same day at New Bern. Promoted to Major posthumously or shortly before death in some records. This CDV has a great period ink inscription  "Killed In a Skirmish with Enemy near Cedar Point, North Carolina Dec 1st, 1863" This image is back marked Charles Miller Burlington, VT.
