Carte de Visite of William Cullen Bryant (1794–1878)

Photographed by Mathew Brady, Published by E. Anthony, New York

A distinguished albumen carte de visite portrait of William Cullen Bryant, the eminent American poet, journalist, and civic leader. Captured by Mathew Brady in the early 1860s for the famed “Brady’s National Portrait Gallery” series, this finely executed seated view presents Bryant in contemplative profile, his refined features and white beard rendered with exceptional clarity and tonal richness.

Published by E. Anthony with the firm’s distinctive backmark, this CDV stands as a premier example of Civil War-era literary portraiture. Bryant, celebrated as a leading member of the “Fireside Poets” and long-time editor of the New York Evening Post, was a towering figure in nineteenth-century American letters and abolitionist journalism.

The print exhibits outstanding contrast, sharp detail, and  fine mount condition, with rounded corners. A highly important and museum-quality portrait of one of America’s most influential men of letters.
