Carte de Visite (CDV) of Assistant Surgeon Wetley T. Rice – 142nd New York Infantry

Original Civil War Carte de Visite (CDV) of Wetley T. Rice, who served as a medical officer in the 142nd New York Infantry Regiment.

Rice entered Union service on September 29, 1862, when he enlisted at Ogdensburg as an Assistant Surgeon. On the same date he was commissioned into the Field & Staff of the 142nd New York Infantry, a regiment organized in northern New York and assigned to the Army of the Potomac.

As Assistant Surgeon, Rice would have been responsible for the medical care of the regiment’s soldiers—treating battlefield wounds, disease, and camp illnesses while assisting the regimental surgeon in hospital operations and field medical duties.

The 142nd New York Infantry later served in the V Corps and participated in several major campaigns of the Army of the Potomac, including fighting during the Battle of Gettysburg and later operations in Virginia.

Dr. Rice served with the regiment until August 25, 1864, when he was discharged from service.
