This is a sixth-plate daguerreotype from the 1840s, is housed in its original leatherette case.
 
It portrays a young man, late teens to early 20s, seated in a formal three-quarter pose. He stares directly at the camera with a serious, intense expression typical of long exposures. He wears a dark frock coat with velvet collar, white shirt with tall collar, dark bow tie, and waistcoat. His right hand rests near a closed book on a patterned table drape—a common prop for education or respectability.
