American Hero Signed Civil War Document Gen. Adna R. Chaffee-Wounded Gettysburg
Rare document is a Civil War–era item signed by Adna Romanza Chaffee and dated December 30, 1864, at Harpers Ferry. Chaffee began his military career as a private in 1861 and served extensively throughout the Civil War, participating in major campaigns and battles including the Peninsula Campaign, Battle of Antietam, Battle of Fredericksburg, Battle of Gettysburg, and Chancellorsville Campaign. He was wounded multiple times, briefly captured, and promoted for his service.
After the war, Chaffee continued a distinguished military career on the American frontier, earning recognition for his leadership in campaigns against Native American tribes and gaining the nickname “Chaffee’s Guerrillas.” He rose steadily through the ranks, serving in key roles across the western United States.
During the Spanish-American War, he commanded forces in Cuba and was promoted to Major General following success at Battle of El Caney. He later led U.S. troops in China during the Boxer Rebellion, playing a major role in the relief of Beijing.
Chaffee ultimately became U.S. Army Chief of Staff in 1904, completing a remarkable 43-year rise from private to the Army’s highest position. He retired in 1906 after decades of service and later contributed to civic life in Los Angeles.
