1/9th Plate Ambrotype of a Civil War Zouave from Albany, New York – Tinted Red Shirt and Tongue Buckle
This striking 1/9th plate ambrotype captures a seated Civil War-era Zouave soldier from Albany, New York. The subject is depicted wearing a black cravat and a vividly hand-tinted red shirt, enhancing the visual appeal and historical detail of the image. He also wears a distinctive tongue buckle, a common feature among Zouave uniforms of the period. The image is housed in a half leatherette case and features a stamped H. Wendell mat, confirming its Albany provenance.
Albany was home to at least two Zouave units during the Civil War: the Albany Zouave Cadets—part of the 10th New York Militia, organized in 1860—and the 44th New York Infantry Regiment, which was mustered in Albany in August 1861. The 44th adopted an Americanized Zouave uniform, further tying this image to the unique military heritage of the region.
