This 1/6th plate tintype captures a young Union soldier seated in a classic studio pose, exuding youthful determination and quiet pride. He wears the regulation dark blue forage cap (kepi) with its distinctive low crown and leather visor, paired with a standard-issue frock coat, accented by a leather shoulder strap and belt plate. Tucked prominently into his belt is a large knife with a substantial blade and simple hilt—adding a personal touch of self-reliance typical of Civil War infantrymen or cavalrymen who carried sidearms beyond issued weapons.
