Exceptional 1/6th Plate Tintype of Identified Union Soldier – 9th New York Infantry (Hawkins’ Zouaves)

This outstanding 1/6th plate tintype captures a seated Federal soldier dressed in the distinctive and highly recognizable uniform of the 9th New York Infantry, famously known as Hawkins’ Zouaves. The uniform’s striking features — including the short Zouave jacket with braiding matching those of the 9th — leaving little doubt as to the soldier’s regimental affiliation. The image is rich in detail, offering a rare and intimate glimpse into one of the Union Army’s most colorful and storied volunteer units.

Most notably, the soldier proudly displays veteran service stripes on his sleeve, a clear indicator of extended service, as well as a medal pinned to his chest, participation in key campaigns. His composed, resolute expression and formal seated pose speak to the dignity and pride of a soldier who has seen active duty and returned to sit for this commemorative portrait.

The 9th New York Infantry, raised in 1861 under the command of Colonel Rush C. Hawkins, was composed primarily of young, patriotic volunteers from New York City. Modeled after the elite French Zouave units, Hawkins’ Zouaves quickly earned a reputation for both their flamboyant appearance and their fierce fighting spirit. The regiment served with distinction in several major campaigns, including Burnside’s North Carolina Expedition, the Battle of Antietam, and operations in Virginia. Their unique appearance made them popular subjects for period photographers, but images of this quality and detail — particularly those showing veteran status and honors — are increasingly scarce.

Housed in a half case, this tintype remains in good condition for its age, with strong contrast and some light surface wear and scratches. It offers both aesthetic appeal and significant historical value — a compelling addition to any Civil War, Zouave, or early American photography collection.
