Authentic Mid-19th Century Daguerreotype – Rugged Working Man Portrait c. 1840–1845

This striking and character-filled daguerreotype captures the raw, unvarnished essence of mid-19th-century American life—a no-nonsense, weathered man staring directly at the viewer with a furrowed brow, steady eyes, and tousled, windblown dark hair that speaks to hard work outdoors or in the trades.

He wears simple, practical period attire: an open-collared white shirt (or loose chemise) beneath a plain dark wool jacket with visible buttons everyday clothing of a farmer, mechanic, laborer, or frontier tradesman rather than refined urban fashion. The direct gaze and stern expression convey quiet strength and resilience, making this one of those powerful “everyman” portraits that collectors prize for their authenticity.

The portrait is presented in the classic oval format so beloved in American daguerreotypes of the era, framed by a rich gold-colored (brass) oval mat and protective preserver, all housed in its original full leather case with deep maroon/reddish velvet lining and typical 170+ years of honorable wear on the exterior.

Despite expected age-appropriate tarnish, dark spotting, and oxidation around the edges (all safely outside the main portrait area), the central image holds excellent clarity, sharp detail, lifelike contrast, and that unmistakable mirror-like depth unique to the daguerreotype process. This image is housed in a complete leatherette case.
