Exceptional 1/6th Plate Ambrotype of a Confederate Soldier with Rare Paper Mat – Housed in Original Leatherette Case

This outstanding 1/6th plate ambrotype presents a striking portrait of a seated Confederate soldier, captured with exceptional clarity. The soldier is dressed in a  four-button commutation frock coat, a style commonly issued in the early years of the Civil War, especially in the Confederate ranks where uniformity often varied by region and availability. His composed expression and confident posture offer a powerful and personal glimpse into the life of a Southern serviceman during one of the most turbulent periods in American history.

What sets this image apart is the presence of a rare original paper mat, an uncommon and highly desirable feature among collectors of Civil War photography. The paper mat not only frames the image with period-appropriate aesthetic appeal but also speaks to the shortage of supplies in the Confederacy during Union blockades that effected everyone including photographers.

The ambrotype is housed in a complete leatherette case, intact and in good condition, with both covers still attached and the interior velvet lining well-preserved and a repaired spine.

A remarkable and highly collectible piece, this ambrotype would make a standout addition to any Civil War or 19th-century photography collection. Its combination of historical significance, visual impact, and rare presentation features makes it a truly exceptional artifact.
