1/4-Plate Tintype of a Federal Infantryman Armed with Mississippi Rifle
1/4-Plate Tintype of a Federal Infantryman Armed with Mississippi Rifle with Patriotic Painted Backdrop with Hand-Tinted Flag – Full Leatherette Case
A striking and boldly composed 1/4-plate tintype of a Union private standing at attention, his Model 1841 Mississippi rifle with saber bayonet held prominently. Behind him, a dramatic camp-scene backdrop features a large American flag hand-tinted in vivid red, white, and blue, with subtle light green tinting applied to the foliage adding a touch of realism.
The plate exhibits strong contrast and excellent detail throughout the accoutrements, and facial features. As is common with larger-format tintypes, several bends are present and visible at certain angles Overall tonality remains even and highly displayable.
Housed in a complete leatherette case with intact spine, mat, preserver, and glass. A quintessential patriotic Union portrait that beautifully combines military precision with period studio artistry. Very good to fine condition; an outstanding example for display.
