1/4 Plate Relievo Ambrotype in Rare George Washington Booklet Case

This is a fine example of a 1/4 plate relievo ambrotype from the mid-to-late 1850s, a popular American photographic format during the peak of the collodion wet-plate era (roughly 1854–1860s). Ambrotypes are underexposed glass negatives viewed as positives when backed by a dark material (often black varnish, fabric, or the plate itself), producing a direct-positive image with good contrast and detail.

The subject is a young-to-middle-aged man (likely in his 20s or 30s) posed in a classic three-quarter seated view. He wears mid-19th-century formal attire: a dark double-breasted frock coat or sack coat with visible buttons, a white shirt with a turned-down collar, a dark bow tie (or cravat), and possibly a vest beneath. His hands rest on his thighs in a confident, relaxed posture with elbows out, one arm akimbo. His hair is dark, side-parted, and styled in period fashion with side curls or waves framing his face. He has a serious, direct gaze with a stern or dignified expression typical of the era’s studio portraits—long exposures discouraged smiling.

The case is  a rare George Washington booklet case, a highly collectible feature. These “booklet” or book-form cases (sometimes called “book-style” or resembling a small closed book) were specialty designs, often in leather molded or embossed with patriotic motifs. George Washington profiles, medallions, or scenes were popular decorative themes in the 1850s, reflecting American pride in the Founding Fathers. This booklet is fully intact and displays beautifully.
